From a Sign Language Student

I am a recent graduate of a ten-week Sign Language course. This class was not only the most educational experience that I have had in a very long time, it was truly a pleasure to attend. When I first asked to attend this class, I got a response from my boss exactly like the reaction that I have received every time someone learns that I am taking a sign language course: WHY?

I have given the answer some thought, and I guess it is different for each person. Here is my answer: Last year, when I started working full time in a county park, I saw an elderly gentleman working in the park. I discovered he was deaf and, when he spoke, it was difficult for me to understand him. He spoke very loudly. All the other workers tried to avoid this man; they didn't know how to deal with him. I, too, tried to avoid him. By the time I got up enough nerve to face my fears, he was gone. He was only a temporary employee.

I felt bad, and I told myself...if I ever got a chance to undo what I did, I would. So, when a sign language class was offered by the county, I was the first to sign up! I studied harder than most, as frequently as possible and as fast as possible. When the man started work this year, I was somewhat ready. I didn't hesitate but walked right up and started signing!

My fear of people who are deaf is gone forever! I have had several opportunities to use my newly acquired skills within my workplace. I have relayed instructions and given work assignments to a deaf employee. I have answered questions and given directions to deaf people who come to the park. I have also, and most importantly, made some great new friends. By avoiding a person who is deaf, you deprive yourself of meeting another human being who is no different than yourself, except s/he cannot hear.

The management is glad they sent me to class. I am teaching several other co-workers to sign...and even my two boys are signing now. I am planning to go as far as I can with my new skill; I love it and will use it wisely. I feel that my life has changed for the better.

My advice to anyone who has thought about taking a sign language course is: GO FOR IT! People who are deaf have enough to overcome in life without having to deal with our prejudices.
